Core Philosophy
Six simple rules that convey the OS design philosophy:
1. Don’t Waste End Users’ Time
Section titled “1. Don’t Waste End Users’ Time”Clarity over decoration. Purpose over complexity. Modern design reflects purpose, efficiency, and progress. Every step should be unambiguous. Every interaction should help users achieve their goals quickly and confidently. Respect the users’ most valuable resource—their time—by removing friction, guiding with intention, and ensuring flow at every step. Time saved is satisfaction earned.
2. Don’t Re-Invent the Wheel
Section titled “2. Don’t Re-Invent the Wheel”Intuitive design is familiar design. Users arrive with expectations shaped by other tools—meet them where they are. Reuse proven patterns, reduce the learning curve, and build trust. Save creativity for solving new problems, not rethinking the obvious.
3. Be Inclusive
Section titled “3. Be Inclusive”Design for everyone, everywhere. Accessibility, clarity, and equality are non-negotiable. By considering the margins, we improve the center—making products that welcome all users, regardless of ability, environment, or background, and ensure compliance with accessibility standards. Inclusive design isn’t a feature; it’s a foundation.
4. Design for Growth
Section titled “4. Design for Growth”Users don’t hate learning—they hate homework. Teach through gentle guidance: tooltips, hints, and dismissible explanations where they’re truly needed. Embrace complexity when needed but never make it complicated. Don’t explain what’s already intuitive—explanations should illuminate, not clutter. Keep the curve flat and the journey rewarding. Growth happens when learning feels effortless.
5. Be Personal
Section titled “5. Be Personal”Design for humans, not systems. Interfaces should guide without getting in the way, making it easy to succeed and hard to fail. Let people make the product theirs—through customization, flexibility, and branding—without losing structure or safety.
6. Be Agentic
Section titled “6. Be Agentic”Empower, don’t prescribe. Agentic design keeps users in control, with freedom to adapt, explore, and override. Even as systems get smarter, the user remains the driver. Build for a future where technology supports human choice, not replaces it.
